Where Traditional Becomes Exceptional
—
In the mid 1900’s, Francisco Ronquillo developed the art of jewelry repair and design in Manila, Phillipines. As often happens with skilled workers, he saw the value in his trade, and passed his craft down to his son, Ruben. Together, they honed their skills working for a major manufacturer in Manila. Both of them knew that while they were making a decent living for their families in their current work, there had to be something more. Enter the American Dream.
In 1971, Francisco and Ruben traveled across the Pacific Ocean, leaving everything they knew to start a new life in Nashville, Tennessee. At this time, Ruben had a young wife and a 1 year old son, Oliver. He wanted the best life he could provide for his family, he knew America was the answer. In 1974, Ruben moved from Nashville to Marietta, Georgia, and started working independently for all of the major jewelry stores in metro-Atlanta. He quickly became one of the most established jewelsmiths in the area. As a young boy, Oliver would watch his father skillfully repair and create some of the most beautiful pieces; sparkling diamonds, glittering gold, intricate watches and delicate pearls.
At the age of 14, Oliver started learning from his father, developing the same skills Ruben had learned from Francisco a generation earlier. By the age of 17, Oliver himself had become a skilled jewelsmith, and decided his path was that of his father and grandfather before him. For the next 10 years, Oliver worked alongside his father, continuing to establish the Ronquillo name in Cobb County. By 1998, at the age of 28, Oliver started working independently for all of the most distinguished jewelry shops in the area. For the next decade, Oliver, too, became one of the most established jewelsmiths in the area.
In 2008, when the economic crisis hit America, many of the major retail shops closed; those that remained open began to centralize their repairs, leaving the independent and extraordinarily skilled jewelers behind. Oliver took his talents in a different direction when he agreed to accept a management position with the largest jewelry retailer in the world. In Kennesaw, Georgia, he was able to take the busiest shop in the Atlanta area, and successfully run it for several years.
It is now 2019, the economy is booming and America is still the place of great dreams. Oliver saw a need for a shop where people can take their most valued heirlooms and jewels and be confident that the best care will be taken in their repair and design. He wanted to have a shop where the primary focus is not only exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail, but also unparalleled customer care. He also saw the need for a trusted place for repair that was absent of the high-pressure push to buy even more. This is the genesis of The Jewelsmith. Integrating the generations old skill of traditional jewelry repair and design with the most advanced technology of today; including CAD design and laser welding & laser engraving; The Jewelsmith is where traditional becomes exceptional.
